So, I was gonna name this post ‘3 Disappointing Mascaras’, but then I thought it would be a little bit too harsh. None of these are really terrible, I mean, they don’t smudge nor crumble, and mascara is so personal that some people might actually like them. I personally don’t, though, and here is why.
COLLISTAR ART DESIGN MASCARA: Have you ever seen another mascara wand with its rows of bristles so far apart?! I most certainly haven’t! And do you know what kind of look it gives you? The look of a manga character. Wait, curb your enthusiasm! I didn’t mean that you get big, beautiful doe eyes. What I actually meant is that you end up with very few huge, spiky lashes. Which may look flattering on Sailor Moon, but surely not on me!
KIKO EXTRA SCULPT WATERPROOF MASCARA: I mainly got this mascara because its hourglass-shaped wand reminded me of my beloved Too Faced Better Then Sex. They’re actually very different, though, and the KIKO one has a much wider tip that makes not getting mascara on my lids almost impossible. The formula isn’t bad, quite thick and volumizing, but the wand is really too impractical for me to like. Moreover, it’s definitely not waterproof: I tested it during a water treadmill class (I didn’t put my head under water, but did get the occasional splash in my face) and ended up with raccoon eyes.
L’OREAL FALSE LASH TELESCOPIC MASCARA: I really like the wand of this one because it’s very long and thin, perfect for my big eyes and short lashes. The problem is that it barely picks up any product and with two coats I get good length but very little volume. If I add a third coat I do get a decent amount of volume, but my lashes get all clumpy and spidery, which is a big no-no!
Have you ever tried any of these? What was your experience? Have you recently used any disappointing mascaras?

November 25, 2015 at 2:03 pmI agree, Maybelline make some great mascaras!

November 24, 2015 at 12:01 pmI tried the L´Oréal one and had similar experience with it than you have. Funny as it seems to be a pretty hyped product around the blogs.
But as you said, mascara preferences are quite a personal thing and maybe it is the length that draws people in.

November 25, 2015 at 2:07 pmYes, I’ve seen many bloggers rave about it, but it really looks too natural for my taste! Unless I layer it… then it just looks awful!

November 24, 2015 at 12:29 pmHaven’t tried any of them so can’t really give an opinion but I don’t think I would choose to buy any of these. Gemma xx

November 24, 2015 at 2:05 pmGreat post Carol! I haven’t tried any of these, but I know how disappointing it is when a mascara doesn’t live up to your expectations. It’s weird because I used to love Benefits’ They’re Real mascara, but then it suddenly started going all flakey on my lashes. It also made then look really thin if that make sense. I even bought a new one, because I thought it was my one – but I still had the same results. I agree mascara is so personal to each individual, and it’s really down to how the product gels to your lashes.

November 25, 2015 at 2:09 pmI haven’t used They’re Real in a while, but I used to love it. Such a shame it doesn’t seem to be as good as it used to be!

November 24, 2015 at 2:21 pmI once tried the one from L’oréal and I wasn’t impressed either. It also made my lashes super clumpy and sticky and just didn’t work for me.
Right now I’m using one from Manhattan and so far I’m very happy with it 🙂

November 24, 2015 at 2:56 pmLoved the honesty in this post. A good mascara is really hard to come by. My two trusty favorites are from a Japanese company. The biggest problem I find with mascaras aside from actually finding one that can lengthen and add volume is that most run and leave me with panda eyes after a few hours!

November 24, 2015 at 3:51 pmI didn’t use any of these, but for some reason I’m never happy with L’oreal mascaras. My last disappointment is False Lash Superstar. It dried so quickly, I hardly managed to use it 🙁

November 24, 2015 at 5:08 pmOh no, so many suggested L’real Telescopic mascara to me and I’m planning to buy it in the next few weeks bow I’m not so sure. My lashes are short and pathetic so mascara is the trickiest product to buy for me. :-/

November 25, 2015 at 2:15 pmWell, many people seem to like it… But I have a feeling it is one of those mascaras that only look good on those who already have beautiful lashes to begin with.

November 24, 2015 at 5:31 pmTry the L’Oreal telescopic in the black tube – sometimes I find it picks up too much product! But it has a thin plastic brush and I find it gives amazing length!

November 24, 2015 at 7:23 pmI haven’t tried any of these. I am surprised the one from Collistar was disappointing. The L’Oreal Miss Manga mascara was supposed to give a look of anime lashes but it didn’t at all! Finding a perfect mascara is such a difficult task!
Carol in a
November 25, 2015 at 2:19 pmIt definitely is! Especially because I don’t think you can really rely on other people’s reviews, as the final effect very much depends on the lashes you have.

November 24, 2015 at 9:02 pmAppreciate your honesty always. I will steer clear 🙂 Just out of curiosity, do you know how long an average mascara tube SHOULD last? I feel like I just bought one (a few months ago) and it is already out! I don’t even wear mascara everyday..

November 25, 2015 at 2:27 pmThe thing with mascara is that it will dry out/go bad pretty fast even if you don’t use it. I’d say mascara doesn’t really last over six months on average, but if the formula is pretty thick to begin with it might dry out even in as little as three months… Sometimes putting one or two eye drops into the tube makes it come back to life, though.

Carol in a

November 24, 2015 at 9:14 pmHm, most mascaras don’t wow me though! Most are just satisfactory. Some are disappointing, for sure. I’ve not tried any of those, though. Thanks for the pretty overview/layout!

November 24, 2015 at 9:42 pmI’ve been disappointed by Kiko mascaras before, I think it’s just not what they do best. As for L’Oreal, they used to make my HG mascara ages ago when I was around 20 and I never forgave them for discontinuing it! (It was called Le Grand Curl).
Carol in a
November 25, 2015 at 2:34 pmI used one from KIKO ages ago that was really awful, it even irritated my eyes. I don’t think I’ll give them a third chance with mascaras!
I remember using the double-wanded one from L’Oréal when I was in high school. It had the white primer on one end and the black mascara on the other. I think I liked it, but I wasn’t very fussy with my makeup back then.

November 25, 2015 at 8:50 ami’ve tried the last mascara & i totally agree! i have yet to find a mascara that i am loyal to. once i run out (9/10 the mascara dries out before i get good use out of it), it’s a guessing game from there… for now, i’m just going with a more natural look. “/ & is it just me, or do you get mascara on your lids no matter what? lol… oh, just me. okay.

Carol in a
November 25, 2015 at 2:38 pmHaha! Getting mascara on your lids is pretty common, but I think it happens more with some wands than with others. Anyway, to prevent that, I usually get very close to the mirror and and tilt my head back as much as I can.

November 25, 2015 at 11:56 amI haven’t tried any of these. I hate it when a mascara makes my lashes spidery or clumpy. Whenever I pick a mascara, most of the time I check the wand first and mostly go for plastic wands instead of bristle. L’Oréal’s wand looks good however shame that it doesn’t give volume.

November 25, 2015 at 2:41 pmThe Better Than Sex, which is one of my favorites, has bristles, but I like plastic wands too, I don’t really have a preference in that sense.

November 25, 2015 at 9:26 pmI haven’t tried any of those! I hate looking for mascaras, I don’t know which ones to choose and it’s really frustrating for me.
I think the only mascara that has ever disappointed me is the Yves Rocher Sexy Pulp one, it wasn’t really volumising and I love my dramatic lashes.
I hope you have a good day, Carol! xx

November 27, 2015 at 8:21 pmI haven’t tried any of these mascaras, but the KIKO wand looks huge! I can definitely see why you didn’t like it. Even the mascara I use now (the Maybelline Pumped Up!) has a bigger wand than I’m used to so sometimes if I’m not careful I poke myself in the eye, lol.

December 6, 2015 at 4:37 pmI haven’t tried any of these mascaras but I will say one thing: I’m not very impressed with Kiko really, they have a nice lipstick range however and some nice looking products which are tempting but product quality really isn’t amazing.
A pity about the Loreal one because I’ve heard great things about it.
Some great mascaras I have tried, Clarins Wonder Perfect, Smashbox Full Exposure, Tarte Lights Camera Flashes.

December 14, 2015 at 11:33 pmSome of the worst mascaras I’ve used have come off my lashes as flakes and stuck to my face the whole night out and others made me want to rip my eyelashes out because I had an allergic reaction to them. I also hate when I put on mascara and it gets clumpy and looks super fake and horribly applied.
