Monthly favorites: January 2016

The month of January has been pretty uneventful. My two main activities have been as bipolar as the weather: I’ve spent the nicest spring-like days (well above 20° C) soaking up the sun while having long walks in the country, and the freezing ones (below 0° C) curled up on the couch under three or four blankets. Ahhh, the joys of the continental climate… Something that hasn’t changed regardless of the weather is my love for bright lipstick. I’ve worn it in the warmest weather, because, hey, bright lips and bright days just go hand in hand, but I’ve also worn it on the gloomiest days to make up for the overall absence of color. Keep reading to find out which ones I’ve been using and loving the most!

BITE Beauty Luminous Crème Lipstick – Palomino

I’ve just reviewed this in my last post, so let’s get it out of the way. I’ll summarize what I said there by quoting myself: ‘this lipstick is pure perfection’. Click here to find out why! 😉

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

I got my first complexion sponge last summer, but didn’t really like it for foundation (I much more prefer using my fingers or my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush). Turns out I really like it to blend out my under-eye concealer instead. I find it quicker than using my fingers and the end result looks significantly better.

Make Up For Ever Step1 Skin Equalizer Mattifying Primer

I’ve never really been a big face primer wearer, mainly because I didn’t want to add yet another product to my base. This month, though, I got a mini-size of a foundation that wasn’t strictly for oily skin but I still wanted to use, so I thought I’d dig out this MUFE primer to prolong its wear-time on my oily face. I like that it’s silicon-free and contains lactic acid and hyaluronic acid, among other ingredients. It’s not a miraculous product (remember that if you’re oily, no product will ever keep you completely shine-free all day), but I think it’s a good priming option for those who have oily skin but are not big fans of silicony textures.

Burberry Eye Colour Wet & Dry Glow Shadow – 002 Nude

I was super impressed with my first Burberry purchase. The Wet & Dry Glow Shadow in 002 Nude, besides having the prettiest packaging and a fantastic formula, is a very versatile, complex taupy shade. The perfect desk-to-date eyeshadow, if you ask me. You may find my full review with swatches here.

KIKO Matte Muse Lipstick – 05 Haughty Mauve + MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour – Oh, Lady

I love these two liquid lipsticks for different reasons: I prefer the formula of the first and the shade of the latter. KIKO’s liquid lipstick (swatched here) is one of those you completely forget you’re even wearing, as, despite being long-lasting, is very comfortable on the lips. Unfortunately, it was limited edition and it’s sold out in most countries, but US gals can still find it here on sale at $2.90!!! I really think KIKO should make these permanent, because in my opinion the formula is really spot on.

The MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour is even more long-lasting, but slightly less comfortable to wear. Unlike the KIKO one, it dries down immediately, so you have to be extra careful when applying it. That being said, the shade is gorgeous and pretty unique (at least in my collection), so I love it nonetheless! You may read my in-depth review here.

Has your year started off as quietly as mine? Anything exciting in your corner of the planet, both beauty and non-beauty-wise?

That Bite Beauty lipstick is so stunning, I can’t get over it! Love the other things, that MUFE primer only works for me when my skin is at least slightly combination but is amazing! I really need that Burberry Eyeshadow though 🙂 xx

I have the same RT sponge and didn’t like it for foundation either. However, it works good for powder products, the flat side is perfect for that. I should try it for concealers as well and see how it goes, thanks for the idea 🙂 xx

Great picks Carol! I remember reading your Burberry eye shadow review and thinking how beautiful it looked. I’d love to go to a counted of theirs and swatch everything properly. I’ve heard a lot of great things about the Make Up For Ever primers. I have combination skin, so it sounds like it would be good for me too. I don’t mind the silicone textures actually, but I’d definitely like to try one without it.:)

I’ve really missed spring-like days, we’ve had enough minus degrees! I wasn’t a fan of the complexion sponge when I first got it, but now I love using it. I still prefer my brush when I am having a quick makeup. They should release Kiko lipstick again, this time I will make sure to pick up one.

Nothing exciting here in my corner of the world. But a few spring like days and early flowers I noticed on my walks. And a lot of glitter in my January makeup.

I have that RT sponge and I really like it to apply a very heavy foundation, it helps me stop it from sinking into my pores and looking cakey. I use the flat side and I pat it where I need extra coverage. I’m happy with it this way but it “drinks” a lot of product, I think!
And I agree with you that Kiko should make their liquid lipstick part of their permanent line. But based on their past decisions about some great formulas that remained limited editions, I don’t have my hopes up…Beaumiroir

I would looove to get some eyeshadows (and lipsticks) from Burberry especially because I’ve heard all good things about the quality and colors, but it’s not in my budget right now, sadly. However that KIKO liquid lipstick is something I have to get. I think this is one of the few times I’m happy to be in the US since it looks like I might be able to get it for a killer price! Thanks for sharing 🙂

I love all the bold lip colour choices in here! I haven’t tried any burberry eye products but it will be on my wishlist, I’ve felt them in stores and UGH – why they so soft and pretty and expensive?! It’s been mostly cold and rainy on my end here 🙁

I just knew Burberry would make it into this list and for very good reasons too, it’s a stunner. January has been a crazy busy month for me, in between trying to pack and get ready for our trip today and everyone still trying to recover from the nasty cold, there wasn’t enough time in a day.

Loved reading about your beauty favourites, hun! How would you say the Real Techniques sponge compares to the Beauty Blender? I need to replace mine but don’t quite want to spend all that money on it again, I was wondering whether the RT one is a good dupe – the opinions on it seem quite divided. x x

I’ve never tried the Beauty Blender. I was more attracted to the RT one because I thought it would be more versatile, since it has both a pointed end and a flat end. Sorry I can’t be of any help!

I tried my best but couldn’t get to love the RT’s sponge. I’ve heard they’ve changed it since I bought mine but the one I have feels too much like a memory foam. It’s a nightmare to wash. I prefer the Beauty Blender 100x. But I also love the Burberry eyeshadows. 🙂 x

“to make up for the overall absence of color” haha I love that! I tend to go for darker tones on grey days to kind of match (I don’t mind cloudy weather one bit) but I think I’m going to try something colorful next time.

I need to pick up that RT sponge, I keep seeing it everywhere these days. xx
