I won’t lie, experimenting is great fun, but isn’t it nice to have something you know you can always fall back on? I think most of us have those friends, restaurants or pieces of clothing we can rely upon when all else fails… And same goes for makeup, don’t you think?
Personally, I love trying new things and experimenting with different color combinations, but whenever I want to be 100% sure the end result will be great and/or quick to achieve, it’s my trusty makeup bag staples I reach for.
Even though I still haven’t found my holy grail foundation, when it comes to bronzing, blushing and concealing, there are three products that’ll always have my back.
The first one is Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder in shade 50. I love how this powder melts into the skin and gives me the most natural-looking glow. It’s so sheer that you just can’t go overboard and turn yourself into one of those little men who work in chocolate factories (lucky bastards).
Whenever I don’t want to think about what to wear on my cheeks, you can bet your makeup stash that I’ll reach for Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Exposed. This neutral mauvy color pairs well with almost anything and lasts longer than any other powder blush I’ve ever tried.
To conceal those pesky zits or the nasty marks they leave behind, I think nothing can beat the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage (I use it in the shade SC-3). It packs some serious punch in the coverage department and, thanks to its dry consistency, it won’t easily slide off those red, angry pimples that usually tend to disrupt concealer in a couple of hours.
On a day-to-day basis, I don’t really crack my palettes open very often, but usually opt for neutral cream shadows or pencils instead. My most reached for products are the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Creamy Beige (full review here) for a My Lids But Better wash of color, KIKO Long-Lasting Stick Eyeshadow in 06 Golden Brown (swatched here) to throw a little sparkle in the mix, and Essence Long-Lasting Eye Pencil in 19 Hot Scorch (swatched here) to add some subtle definition along the lashlines whenever I leave my lids bare.
To coat my lashes, I like using the thickest, most volumizing formulas. In the past, I purchased several tubes of the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, until one lucky day I decided to give PUPA Vamp a go: it’s basically the same thing for less than half the price (at least here in Italy)!
Lipsticks are by far my most purchased makeup products and I feel like I don’t really have any staples, because I’m constantly rotating the ones I have. That being said, Tom Ford Lip Color Matte in Flame (see it in action here) is probably my most used high-end lipstick, while Maybelline SuperStay 14HR in 160 Infinitely Fuchsia (full review here) is without a doubt my most reached for drugstore one.
And now I’m curious… what are your makeup bag staples?
