REVIEW | Avène Cleanance MAT Mattifying Emulsion

I have oily skin. Those of you who are not here for the first time will probably already know that. As I said before, no cream will ever cure oily skin and magically turn it into normal, but it’s still important to use specifically formulated products that at least won’t make it worse.

It’s with this in mind that I purchased Avène Cleanance MAT Mattifying Emulsion. Avène is a French pharmacy brand that incorporates thermal water in all of their products and Cleanance MAT is no exception. Here is the ingredient list:

AVENE THERMAL SPRING WATER (AVENE AQUA). CYCLOMETHICONE. PROPYLENE GLYCOL. GLYCERIN. POLYACRYLATE-13. POLYMETHYL METHACRYLATE. POLYISOBUTENE. ZINC GLUCONATE. BENZOIC ACID. CAPRYLYL GLYCOL. CETRIMONIUM BROMIDE. DIMETHICONE. DIMETHICONOL. DISODIUM EDTA. FRAGRANCE (PARFUM). GLYCERYL LAURATE. POLYSORBATE 20. PYRIDOXINE HCL. SALICYLIC ACID. SODIUM HYDROXIDE. SORBITAN ISOSTEARATE. WATER (AQUA).

Avène Cleanance MAT Mattifying Emulsion ReviewBesides thermal water, which is supposed to have soothing properties, the emulsion contains a few ingredients that may have beneficial effects on blemish-prone skin:

  • Zinc Gluconate (also found in BIODERMA Sébium H2O micellar water I reviewed last week): anti-inflammatory;
  • Pyridoxine HCl (Vitamin B6): antibacterial, antioxidant;
  • Salicylic Acid: antibacterial, leave-on exfoliant.

Cleanance MAT is fragranced. The scent is very subtle and my sensitive nose has no problem with it. The texture is lightweight, almost gel-like, and pleasant to apply. Foundation blends easily on top of it. So far, so good!

There is only one problem: this supposedly mattifying emulsion is not mattifying. AT ALL! Avène’s website states that ‘its microcapsules absorb excess sebum for an instant shine-free effect’. Well, they must have forgotten to add those ‘microcapsules’ to my tube, because my skin looks almost dewy upon application and gets oily faster than when I don’t use it. I don’t think it’s a bad product per se, but it definitely doesn’t work for my skin, so I won’t be repurchasing it.

Have you ever used Cleanance MAT? How did you like it? Can anyone recommend a good moisturizer for oily skin?

    Such a pity that it didn’t work for you, it sounded promising! I would recommend you something, but I’m looking for it as well, so we’re in the same boat hahaha.

    I haven’t tried it and I will definitely not give it a try too! Not every cream works on my skin as I have the same problem so it is almost impossible to find a cream that will turn oily skin to normal skin for a whole day! We should keep looking for it 🙂 x

      I don’t really expect anything to keep me shine-free all day, but at least upon application! 😉
      As you said, let’s keep looking! 🙂

    Maybe you need to purchase the microcapsules separately? To be honest, I stick to hydrating serums and skip the moisturizers most days, that is the only way to keep my skin balanced.

      Oooh, you’re right, I had not thought about that!!!
      I have my eyes on a hyaluronic acid serum, I’ll probably try that one next.
