Surviving the Heat Wave: Homemade Popsicles

Today’s post was inspired by Mother Nature and the heat wave she kindly bestowed upon us, European folks.

At the moment, Italy is very hot. Extreeeemely hot. So hot that survival instinct pushes us all to find a way – any way – to keep our body temperature below the level of spontaneous combustion. Any examples?

There are those who lie down on the floor (apparently it’s an old Sicilian trick), those who wear underwear instead of shorts, those who use public fountains as their own personal pool, and then there’s me that just eats popsicle after popsicle like there’s no tomorrow.

In order to avoid ingurgitating huge amounts of colorings, syrups and all that jazz, I usually make my own. It’s super quick and easy! Below I’m going to share the two recipes I’ve been using the most, lately.

YOGURT & LIME POPSICLES – thirst-quenching and nutritious

Ingredients for 6 molds

  • Yogurt: 250 g
  • Water: 200 ml
  • Lime: 2
  • Sugar: 2 tbsp.

After dissolving sugar in water (you may want to use lukewarm water), add yogurt and mix to combine perfectly.

Squeeze lime juice directly into the mixture (I do it with my hands, no need for a squeezer), then add some pulp and zest as well.

Mix again and pour the concoction into the molds.

Insert popsicle sticks and freeze until firm (5-6 hours).

CAPPUCCINO POPSICLES – delicious and energizing (my favorites!)

Ingredients for 6 molds

  • Coffee: 200 ml
  • Condensed milk: 150 g
  • Water: 150 ml

Combine condensed milk and hot coffee, add cold water, mix and pour into the molds.

Insert popsicle sticks and freeze until firm (5-6 hours).

How about you? How do you stay cool during a heat wave? Please, let me know in the comments, and if you try these recipes, tell me how you liked them!

Eating popsicles is a genius way to stay cool in the summer heat and yours looks so delicious and healthy! We’ve never heard of laying on the floor to beat the heat, we may have to give that a try soon too!
