KIKO Velvet Passion Matte Lipsticks – “Crazy Colours” in 323 Imperial Blue and 324 Slate Grey ($12/£10.90)
I don’t know if you’ve heard, but KIKO just recently expanded their Velvet Passion range (which I reviewed last year) with five new “Crazy Colours”: 321 Orchid Violet, 322 Sapphire Green, 323 Imperial Blue, 324 Slate Grey, and 325 Black. So I took advantage of the 30%-off sale KIKO had around Christmas and purchased the blue (to see if it could be a dupe for my beloved Rouge Dior in 602 Visionary Matte) and the grey (because I had been wanting to try a grey lipstick since I saw the MAC x Halsey Lipstick last spring).
Let’s have a look at 323 Imperial Blue first.
KIKO Velvet Passion Matte Lipsticks in 323 Imperial Blue
Lip swatch of the KIKO Velvet Passion Matte Lipstick in 323 Imperial Blue. It looks pretty even on the lips, but I still recommend to apply it on top of a blue liner
First things first: no, Imperial Blue is not a dupe for Dior’s Visionary Matte. Dior’s lipstick is a beautiful deep navy blue – the perfect mix of edgy and elegant, while KIKO’s looks lighter and greener. I personally prefer the former, but formula-wise they’re pretty similar: same satin-matte finish, same comfortable feel. Lasting-power is also similar, and that means you’re going to need to apply a matching eyeliner first if you really want it to last – a few hours, not a whole day, mind you (if you want to know more about this, check out my personal tips on how to make blue lipstick wearable).
Comparison swatches: Rouge Dior in 602 Visionary Matte (L), KIKO Velvet Passion Matte Lipstick in 323 Imperial Blue (R). Nail polish is the Chanel Longwear Nail Colour in 505 Particulière
324 Slate Grey is a deep bluish grey – a beautiful shade of grey, if you ask me, but the formula doesn’t deliver. It looks pretty patchy, even upon application, so you absolutely have to apply it on top of a matching eyeliner (which I think you should always do with very deep shades regardless of the formula, but, still, I think 324 Slate Grey could be improved).

Honestly, I’m not exactly wowed by these new KIKO lipsticks, but they at least give you the chance to experiment with unusual shades without breaking the bank. Just remember you’ll need to use them on top of a matching eyeliner! 😉
Have you tried any of these new KIKO Velvet Passion Matte Lipsticks – “Crazy Colours”? What was your experience? And if you haven’t, do shades like these appeal to you?

January 4, 2017 at 6:46 pmIt seems to be trendy for companies to make these weird colors, but as far as wearability they haven’t caught on.
Even Urban Decay doesn’t post pics of models wearing their blue and green lippies. I wish they would!!

January 4, 2017 at 8:58 pmI love when I see these shades on others but I don’t think they are suitable for me, I would probably look ridiculous in a blue lipstick!!! But you look awesome and I am impressed!

January 4, 2017 at 10:57 pmI agree with the other commentor, seems like beauty companies are really coming out with these trendy shades which look great on runway and for editorial but for day to day looks, I think I’ll pass.

January 5, 2017 at 3:37 amYeah, there have been a lot of blues and greens…which is great for Halloween. I would love a green lipstick though! And I’m even weary of purple, unless if it’s more berry or plum like Anastasia Beverly Hills in Craft.

January 5, 2017 at 7:39 amI like to experiment with color for You Tube, but I dont think I would spend my money on such a lipstick. Not even the Kiko price. And even though the blue lipstick works with your complexion I don’t see me falling for something like this any time soon.

January 7, 2017 at 5:06 pmOh wow, these shades are so unusual! I can see them working when in front of the camera, though I can’t imagine wearing them on a daily basis. That said, I absolutely love this blog post as it’s a chance to see something entirely different – the shades are so dark and mysterious!! 🙂

January 8, 2017 at 10:51 amI remember that Dior lipstick and thought it looked great on you. I definitely prefer that shade of blue over these. But it’s still fun to experiment with I bet.

January 12, 2017 at 12:45 pmHow do you always pull off these bold colours, I need some tips! I love blue lipsticks, I think they just look so cool with minimal make-up. I was going to get the blue liquid lipstick from Too Faced a few months ago. But then I obviously chickened out and didn’t!! Loved the tip about applying eyeliner as a base too. It’s a shame about the formula though. I know that quite a few bold lipstick shades can be a little patchy!

October 16, 2017 at 5:03 amThanks for review… it’s informative and inspired! Never red beauty blogs before but I’m delighted I did. Going to go for the Dior 602 love the lippies they do. Such lush luxuries. Delighted they do a blue look too. It’s great to see the shades and brands in action. Keep beautiful
