My Makeup Bag Staples

My Makeup Bag Staples – For When Experimenting Is Not an Option

I won’t lie, experimenting is great fun, but isn’t it nice to have something you know you can always fall back on? I think most of us have those friends, restaurants or pieces of clothing we can rely upon when all else fails… And same goes for makeup, don’t you think?

Personally, I love trying new things and experimenting with different color combinations, but whenever I want to be 100% sure the end result will be great and/or quick to achieve, it’s my trusty makeup bag staples I reach for.

Even though I still haven’t found my holy grail foundation, when it comes to bronzing, blushing and concealing, there are three products that’ll always have my back.

The first one is Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder in shade 50. I love how this powder melts into the skin and gives me the most natural-looking glow. It’s so sheer that you just can’t go overboard and turn yourself into one of those little men who work in chocolate factories (lucky bastards).

Whenever I don’t want to think about what to wear on my cheeks, you can bet your makeup stash that I’ll reach for Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Exposed. This neutral mauvy color pairs well with almost anything and lasts longer than any other powder blush I’ve ever tried.

To conceal those pesky zits or the nasty marks they leave behind, I think nothing can beat the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage (I use it in the shade SC-3). It packs some serious punch in the coverage department and, thanks to its dry consistency, it won’t easily slide off those red, angry pimples that usually tend to disrupt concealer in a couple of hours.

On a day-to-day basis, I don’t really crack my palettes open very often, but usually opt for neutral cream shadows or pencils instead. My most reached for products are the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Creamy Beige (full review here) for a My Lids But Better wash of color, KIKO Long-Lasting Stick Eyeshadow in 06 Golden Brown (swatched here) to throw a little sparkle in the mix, and Essence Long-Lasting Eye Pencil in 19 Hot Scorch (swatched here) to add some subtle definition along the lashlines whenever I leave my lids bare.

To coat my lashes, I like using the thickest, most volumizing formulas. In the past, I purchased several tubes of the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, until one lucky day I decided to give PUPA Vamp a go: it’s basically the same thing for less than half the price (at least here in Italy)!

Lipsticks are by far my most purchased makeup products and I feel like I don’t really have any staples, because I’m constantly rotating the ones I have. That being said, Tom Ford Lip Color Matte in Flame (see it in action here) is probably my most used high-end lipstick, while Maybelline SuperStay 14HR in 160 Infinitely Fuchsia (full review here) is without a doubt my most reached for drugstore one.

And now I’m curious… what are your makeup bag staples?

I’ve actually never tried any of the products you’ve mentioned here! I reaaally want to try the kiko stick eyeshadows though, I love the idea of having a quick way to glam up your look.

I’ve heard so much about Exposed! I have. A few Tarte mini blushes and the formula is great!

Having something to fall back on is essential! I’ve been experimenting a lot lately which is wreaking havoc on my skin (obviously my own fault) but because I never got too into actual skincare enough to have holy grail status products, it’s been a little tough. As for makeup, I’ve heard so much about Tarte’s Exposed and Maybelline’s Color Tattoo though, and they sound amazing! I just need to actually get them haha.

Great post. It’s nice to have something you know you can always rely on. I also feel like I haven’t found my perfect foundation but I’m still looking though.

I love the Maybelline Color Tattoos, they’re so great for the price and so many shades to choose from. I really want to get my hands on some Kiko products – they sound really good as well. Also, I’d like to try one of the Tart Amazonian Clays!

I don’t wear a lot of make up myself so I tend to stick to my Bare Minerals foundation. It seems to be the only product that doesn’t make me break out in spots.

Bobby Brown Corrector, The Body Shop Bronzer for when I don’t want blush, my L´Oréal Superliner Liquid liner and a Color Tattoo or Naked Lunch on my lids.
Paired with a random powder, mascara and most likely red lipstick, but these vary a lot.

I still haven’t found my holy grail foundation, there are a few that I like but I am sure there’re better in the market! Color tattoo and kiko sticks are what I use daily, they are just so easy to use and last all day. Also eyeliner and a good mascara to finish of the eyes then apply lipstick, I’m ready to go.

Uhmm…this type of posts always make me think and I never managed to come up with a permanent staple. Well, I guess Maybelline Instant Age Rewind is a MUST have for me but that’s pretty much it. I can’t narrow down the other products. This would make a great idea for a post if I could ever figure out the products.

You’re totally right! I’ve actually never thought about it before until now but I can tell that Sleek and Kiko products are the ones I reach for the most and find myself going back to them again and again especially on mornings when I haven’t really got the time to think about my makeup. 🙂

I’m the same, I love to experiment and try new things! But sometimes I just love to create a make-up look with products that I know will look great. My staples have to be the L’Oréal Infallible Matte Foundation, NARS Radiant Creamy concealer and Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara.:) – How to get LONG and HEALTHY hair FAST

My staples are the easy-to-use, foolproof products that I reach for on those days when I feel lazy or don’t have much time. That’s usually cream eyeshadows, powder foundation, sheer lip crayons!

I love Les Beiges as well, I always carry it in my purse. It’s great for touching up mid day. Exposed is just one of the best purchases I ever made, I’m sure that’s the case for many. I really like the Tom Ford Matte formula, I have Plum Lush which just amazing! xx

I haven’t tried any of the products you talked about, so that’s a few things to add to my would-like-to-experiment-with list, haha 🙂
One of my makeup bag essentials at the moment is a concealer from Primark’s beauty range, P.S. Love… – their under eye concealer totally changed my makeup ‘game’!

Like you I still haven’t found a foundation that has totally wowed me. I’m still searching though. I also purchase lipsticks the most which is odd because eyeshadows used to be my most purchased items.

Some great picks here, Chanel always impresses with their foundation so I’m not surprised it’s one of your staple products. The Tom Ford Flame lipstick looks stunning!

My favourites at the moment at Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Foundation, Face Dior Golden Shock Limited Edition palette in Golden Shock, Eyes Clarins Wonder Perfect, highlighter NARS liquid highlighter in Copacabana, MAC lipstick in Paramount.

Great post thanks so much for sharing!

The Maybelline color tattoos are so good. And I definitely have one in my makeup bag all the time! Also that Tom Ford lipstick looks so lovely!
One of my go-to lipsticks atm is Hue by MAC, which I carry with me anywhere I go!
    Have a lovely day! 🙂

I think my only real staples are my MAC Pro Longwear Foundation, The Balm Sexy Mama Powder and MAC Fix +. I rotate a few different mascaras and almost always reach for a palette. But if I’m really in a rush I’ll just slap on some tinted moisturizer and I’m done.

You’re totally right that you need makeup staples in your makeup wardrobe, the other day I was about to go out and thought why not try some new beauty products out which have been sitting there for ages… big mistake, a few didn’t suit at all and I had to wash it all off and reach for my go too beauty essentials!

Some great picks here Carol, a really nice range and do like the look of the Tom Ford lipstick, you pull off orange lipsticks nicely.

Keen to try the new Two Faced mascara, heard positive things!

    Great post 🙂
